Government Response to Anti-Abortion Petition

22 Apr

The Government has responded to the recent Anti-Abortion e-petition which was signed by over 5,000 people.

The petition read:

“We the undersigned petition the Prime Minister to deny any extension planned for the 1967 Abortion Act to Northern Ireland, as we believe in the right to life.”

And the Government responded by saying:

“Thank you for taking the time and trouble to sign this e-petition.  The Government has no plans to extend the Abortion Act 1967 to Northern Ireland.

Our position remains that any proposals to change abortion legislation in Northern Ireland are matters best dealt with by the Northern Ireland Assembly once it assumes responsibility for criminal law.”
